Connect with nature

When planning a new build or extension it’s normal that the majority of people think of their house and garden as two separate spaces with a fixed divide between them. However, modern life is changing the way we design. According to recent studies we spend around 90% of our time indoors. But most people would accept that being outdoors is hugely important for our health. How can we balance these issues? Many designers are looking for exciting ways to connect indoor spaces with the outside and ultimately connect with nature. Connecting indoor and outdoor spaces will not only inspire and motivate us but also deliver the quality of life we need despite so many of us living in crowded urban areas.

So what is indoor-outdoor living?

Indoor-outdoor living is building and designing a bridge between your home and the natural world. Indoor-outdoor flow opens up your home so you can extend your living space and visually unite the inside and outside.

How can this be achieved?

Connecting indoor and outdoor spaces — even if it’s only a seating or entertaining area — can help bring the outside in. Maintaining a floor level that’s the same or close to your interior floor can create that important flow between inside and outside spaces. Interior designers also suggest using the same or similar flooring both inside and out, as well as looking at nature for inspiration when choosing colours and materials.

Natural light

Another important way to connect your living space to nature is through the use of natural light. How can this be incorporated? Generally this concept is created through the use of bifolding doors and windows. This encourages air flow into the home and works well with connecting entertaining areas such as decks or patio areas to indoor living spaces. These spaces are designed to connect with nature and ultimately generate joy and wellbeing.
