Concept external rear image for extension with courtyard area in Essex

For this project, our client envisioned a contemporary, spacious extension that respects the existing character of their home while embracing modern design principles. The proposal includes enhanced parking and landscaping, creating a harmonious blend between architecture and nature.

Brief

The design brief was to expand the existing house with a contemporary addition that sits comfortably within the natural landscape, incorporating high-quality materials and sustainable design features. Key elements include a two-storey side extension and a rear extension that connects with the property’s surrounding greenery, creating an open, light-filled space ideal for family life. To respect the home’s historical character, the design intentionally contrasts with the existing structure, providing a clear visual separation that honors the property’s heritage while enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Concept

Our concept centers on creating an innovative and modern addition that respects both the existing property and the local context. By maintaining the height of the first-floor extension below the existing eaves, the new structure complements neighbouring two-story homes and respects sight lines for adjacent properties. Large windows and thoughtful orientation provide ample natural light and connection to the garden, while the new landscaping incorporates natural planting, seamlessly blending the property with its verdant surroundings.

To enhance biodiversity and soften the building’s profile, the ground floor extension’s roof will feature a 50sqm wildflower garden, which helps the structure integrate more naturally into the landscape while supporting local ecology.

Challenges

A primary challenge in the project was achieving the desired expansion without impacting the privacy and sight lines of neighboring homes. We addressed this by carefully controlling the height and depth of the extensions, maintaining clear sight lines from neighbouring windows and doors. Working within these constraints required thoughtful spatial planning, ensuring that the design maximises interior space without compromising on external harmony. Additionally, integrating sustainable practices into the design, such as wildflower planting and efficient materials, required detailed collaboration with our landscape and ecological consultants.

This project’s thoughtful approach to form, materiality, and environmental impact ensures that the home will serve as a high-quality, sustainable, and context-sensitive family home, enhancing both the property’s functionality and the overall character of the neighbourhood.
