Loughton
Our client’s goal for this project was to create a small but impactful kitchen extension that would bring in natural light and enhance the overall flow and warmth of the home. By adding thoughtful details and maximising the available space, this extension creates a welcoming, light-filled kitchen that is both functional and beautifully designed.
Brief
The brief was to design a compact extension that would transform the kitchen area into a bright and open space, ideal for family cooking and socialising. This involved incorporating a large picture window and a rooflight directly above the kitchen to flood the area with natural light, creating an uplifting environment that would make cooking and dining a true pleasure. The extension also called for a modern brick finish with unique detailing, including a soldier course for added character and a built-in planter to bring nature into the space.
Concept
Our design concept centers on blending functionality with warmth and visual interest. The modern brick facade with a soldier course detail brings a contemporary, crafted feel to the extension, while the large window and rooflight maximise sunlight throughout the day. The built-in planter, located next to a cozy window seat, adds a green, calming element to the kitchen space, integrating indoor and outdoor environments seamlessly. This carefully placed window seat creates a perfect spot to relax, socialize, or enjoy garden views, making the kitchen a multi-functional, inviting hub of the home.
Challenges
The primary challenge was maximising light and space within a modest extension footprint. By positioning the rooflight over the main work area and adding a large picture window, we achieved a well-lit, airy atmosphere without increasing the extension’s size. Additionally, creating the soldier course detailing required precision to maintain a clean, modern aesthetic while adding architectural interest. Through careful planning, we were able to design an extension that feels spacious, warm, and connected to the outdoors, despite its small size.
This kitchen extension demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform even a small area into a bright, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space, enhancing the home’s overall character and creating a delightful environment to cook, relax, and entertain.
